So, when renowned investigative cybersecurity journalist Brian Krebs recently published a quizzical article entitled The iPhone 11 Pro’s Location Data Puzzler, tongues began to wag.

What puzzled Krebs is that the privacy interface for Location Services on his iPhone didn’t seem to work as he expected, which he rightly thought was worth investigating carefully.

After all, thanks to GPS, modern smartphones can work out where you are with astonishing precision, even when you’re offline and have no other positioning data to refer to.

Voice assistants are growing in popularity, but the technology has been experiencing a parallel rise in concerns about privacy and accuracy. Apple’s Siri is the latest to enter this gray space of tech. This week, The Guardian reported that contractors who review Siri recordings for accuracy and to help make improvements may be hearing personal conversations.

One of the contract workers told The Guardian that Siri did sometimes record audio after mistaken activations. The wake word is the phrase “hey Siri,” but the anonymous source said that it could be activated by similar-sounding words or with the noise of a zipper. They also said that when an Apple Watch is raised and speech is detected, Siri will automatically activate.

“There have been countless instances of recordings featuring private discussions between doctors and patients, business deals, seemingly criminal dealings, sexual encounters and so on,” the source said. “These recordings are accompanied by user data showing location, contact details, and app data.”

Apple has said that it takes steps to protect users from being connected with the recordings sent to contractors. The audio is not linked to an Apple ID and less than 1% of daily Siri activations are reviewed. It also sets confidentiality requirements for those contract workers. We reached out to Apple for further comment and will update the story if we receive it.

Apple, along with Google and Amazon, all have similar policies for the contract workers it hires to review those audio snippets. But all three voice AI makers have also been the subject of similar privacy breaches, either by whistleblowers going to the press or through errors that give users access to incorrect audio files.

Einige weltweit oft genutzte iPhone-Apps zeichnen alle Eingaben des Nutzers auf. Dies geschieht zwar mit einem bisher legalen Analyse-Tool, aber oft heimlich und ohne ausreichende Absicherung. Auch Kreditkartendaten sind in Gefahr.

Es ist verständlich, dass App-Entwickler gerne das Nutzerverhalten analysieren, um ihre Anwendungen zu optimieren. Wenn dies offen, sicher und mit Einverständnis des Nutzers geschieht, ist dagegen auch nichts einzuwenden. "Techcrunch" hat allerdings ein Tool ausfindig gemacht, dass in weltweit populären Apps Eingaben detailliert aufzeichnet, wobei Nutzer gar nicht oder nur völlig unzureichend informiert werden. Die Sicherheitsmaßnahmen sind außerdem gelegentlich so schlampig, dass Angreifer leichtes Spiel haben, sensible Daten zu erbeuten.


In Echtzeit sehen, was der Nutzer tut
Der Überwachungsdienst heißt Glassbox. Unter anderem kommt das Tool in den Apps von Santander, Citibank, Singapore Airlines oder Expedia zum Einsatz, wie der Website des britischen Unternehmens zu entnehmen ist. Es erlaubt den Entwicklern unter anderem, kontinuierliche Screenshots aufzunehmen, wenn die App genutzt wird. In einem Tweet umschreibt Glassbox das so: "Stell dir vor, deine Website oder App könnte in Echtzeit genau sehen, was deine Nutzer gerade tun und warum sie es tun. Das ist keine hypothetische Frage mehr, sondern eine echte Möglichkeit. Das ist Glassbox. Erlebe es selbst."

We knew that other companies were recording interactions with their smart devices, and using some of those recordings to check for quality by having real people listen to those interactions. But, until now, we thought Apple was different. 

On Friday Apple confirmed, to the Guardian, a whistleblowers account that the company has similar practices to Google and Amazon, but never disclosed that fact in its privacy policy. 

Apple samples a small number of recordings of interactions with its voice assistant Siri, which is used by millions of Americans on their iPhones, Apple Watch, and other iOS and Mac devices. According to the whistleblower, that includes "countless instances of recordings featuring private discussions between doctors and patients, business deals, seemingly criminal dealings, sexual encounters and so on."

I accidentally wake up Siri all the time on my watch or phone when I have no intention of interacting with her, and I've never given any thought to the fact that she's listening to whatever goes on in the background. In fact, we have a daughter whose name apparently sounds close enough to "hey Siri," that I'm frequently reminded by my iPhone that "you need to clean up your room," and "come set the table," are not commands yet supported by voice assistants (though that would be awesome).

Depuis la première version de macOS Mojave, le dossier Safari (~/Library/Safari) n’est plus accessible qu’à une poignée d’applications (il était auparavant ouvert à tous les vents). Le Terminal ne peut même pas en afficher le contenu… Le système d’exploitation fournit l’accès à ce dossier à une poignée d’apps (et au Finder).

Jeff Johnson a néanmoins trouvé une faille qui permet à n’importe quel logiciel de regarder de plus près le contenu de ce dossier normalement protégé des regards indiscrets. Le tout, sans avoir besoin des sésames du système ou de l’utilisateur. La vulnérabilité se passe même de boîtes de dialogue d’autorisation. En exploitant ce bug, un malware peut obtenir l’historique de navigation et donc, potentiellement, des informations à caractère privé.

Mieux, ou pire encore, une application ayant reçu l’estampille du notaire de Mojave (une mesure de sécurité inaugurée avec macOS 10.14) pourrait tout de même être en mesure de piocher sans autorisation dans l’historique de Safari. En revanche, une application sandboxée, c’est à dire distribuée sur le Mac App Store, est incapable de tirer partie de cette faille.

Le découvreur a dûment informé Apple de sa découverte, avec tous les détails de la faille. Jeff Johnson a déjà été crédité par le constructeur pour ses trouvailles, et il est probable qu’une future mise à jour de sécurité vienne combler ce bug.
