Apple has downplayed the impact of the attacks by the Mac Defender rogue antivirus family, but anecdotal evidence from Apple Store Geniuses suggests the problem is widespread. On May 24th, Apple acknowledged the problem and issued guidance to help users avoid and remove Mac Defender. Dans un tweet publié dimanche, un groupe de hackers liés au mouvement AntiSec affirme avoir attaqué un serveur appartenant à Apple. AntiSec, qui regroupe des pirates anciennement membres de LulzSec et des Anonymous, milite pour la non diffusion d’information permettant aux firmes de sécuriser leurs services. Ces derniers mois, Anonymous et Lulz Security s’en étaient pris entre autres aux données de Sony, Nintendo, ou encore de la CIA et du FBI.
Pour le moment, cette attaque sonne comme un avertissement, le groupe de hackers ayant affirmé être "occupé ailleurs". Les pirates auraient en effet simplement diffusés les identifiants et mots de passe d’un serveur appartenant à la Firme et ceux d’une trentaine de comptes. Mais lorsque l’on connaît l’impact qu’a eu l’attaque de LulzSec contre le PSN de Sony, on peut redouter ce qui arriverait si les AntiSec décidaient de faire d’iTunes leur nouvelle cible.

A PDF titled “Hardening tips for OS X Snow Leopard”, the file is free for anyone to grab. Here it is (direct PDF link). It spells out a lot of simple steps you can take to “harden up” your Mac from security threats. Following them all won’t guarantee that your Mac is safe from every threat out there, but it will make life harder for the malware merchants.

Here’s a quick update on the Mac OS X malware landscape, a rather hot topic this month. May started off with the announcement of the DIY malware kit Weyland-Yutani BOT. This news was shortly thereafter dwarfed by numerous reports of fake (a.k.a. rogue) security software for the Mac; names include Mac Defender, Mac Protector, Mac Security, and MacGuard.
