I've heard a lot of buzz about Twitter parties, so I decided it was time to look into them. I tried one hosted by Hotels.com yesterday, and it was actually a lot of fun.

Is it Possible to Gamify a Boring Task? A: Yes, but... Gamification Co

Is it Possible to Gamify a Boring Task? A: Yes, but... Gamification Co | Must Play | Scoop.it
The reality is… you enjoy playing games. We’ve been playing games since the days of cavemen, and it is your nature to compare yourself to see how you measure up to others.

Games drive emotions, build loyalty, and create character.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

I agree gamification of a boring task is possible, but doesn't scale well. My thought would be to redesign the task so it is less boring. One way to do that is reduce the task down and inject more game elements.

Another way to remake a boring task is to find out why its BORING. Everything is better WITH other people. I'm Riffing Andre W Chen's excellent How To Create A Social Product on Scenttrail Marketing right now: http://www.scenttrail.com/riffing-andre-w-chen-how-to-design-successful-social-products/

Relevant because Andre discusses the feedback loops needed to keep engagement across different segments and personas. Same applies to gamifying a boring task.

Technology is having a huge impact on the way companies engage employees and customers. Enter gamification. What is it and why should you care about it?
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Everything is coming up gamification and with good reason - it works. This is NOT to say the application of game theory is easy, but gamification is lexicon we must have in our Internet marketing vocabularies.

Open Source Rules: Gaijin Games Allows Customers To Riff Videos For Money | Must Play | Scoop.it

Marty Note
Loved this note from Gijin Games granting permission to its users to riff videos on YouTube and make money from them. The world is moving open source and every product is a series of services waiting to happen.

By granting users the right to do what they were doing anyway Gaijin looks like a hero and they can mine the videos created by their users to learn how to tune their game. Brilliant example of being open to the new age instead of clinging to old memes like copyright and intellectual property.

I don't think they are the only things on the slide. I think Social, Mobile, Local, marketing gamification and video games are all become one and the same idea controlled by the game consoles we carry in our pockets (Smart Phones).

Gaming For Social Good & Cure Cancer Starter

If you don't think my eyes got wide and my breath caught in my throat a little when I saw this post about how Zynga supports social good via game play you don't know me and my Cure Cancer Starter project, our crowdfunding platform for cancer research (http://www.curecancerstarter.org). .

It may seem strange to think of making curing cancer a game, but not to me (a cancer survivor). I don't care WHAT helps as long as engagement, awareness and donations all go UP.

Over the weekend I scooped a piece from Dan Pallotta about how we think about charity ALL WRONG. One way that is wrong is charity is often seen as boring requirement instead of exciting FUN. As an Internet marketer I would rather sell "exciting fun" any day since that SCALES. Boring requirement doesn't scale.

Can Zynga help cure cancer? You bet. Am I going to be calling on Zynga to help do jus that? You bet.

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Mobile gaming is fully upon us. I'm designing CrowdFunde, our crowdfunding and content marketing app, now and creating mobile first. Bet video games head in the same direction - create the mobile game first then, if the numbers merit it, move to game consoles, laptops and desktops.

Gotten so I think of all Internet marketing as a game and the smartphone as the game console (lol). This LA Times article about Zynga making FarmVille for Mobile is a SOT (Sign of the Times). M

Generation Like – FRONTLINE Reveals Gamification Driving Social Media Marketing [video]

Generation Like – FRONTLINE Reveals Gamification Driving Social Media Marketing [video] | Must Play | Scoop.it
FRONTLINE explores how the perennial teen quest for identity and connection has migrated to social media – and how big brands are increasingly co-opting young consumers’ digital
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Fascinating look "behind the curtain" of celebrity and social media. The power of the like isn't discussed from its serendipitous condition roots more from the cultural phenomenon. This "new fame" gets bestowed to the lucky few (as always).

The collaborative nature of success is an underlying theme. Note the comment by the skateboarder who gets more hits when he skates with his friend the social media star than based on his talent alone.

The strange randomness of this new fame is probably neither strange or random. There are probably old core values driving things despite the new generation of content creators. The Frontline piece does show how brands and branding are changing and becoming more apparently democratic.

Do brands really LISTEN more or simply ape what is necessary to sell more sugared water now? Time will tell.

Social media posts tell a story about you and your brand. Here are cautions to heed, trends to follow, and steps to take as you build your social media brand...
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

The Missing Tip
These are great tips I agree with, but they are missing one BIG TIP - Gamify. Social media lends itself to gamification beautifully. When you are playing a game you look forward to notices on progress and new happenings.

When playing a game you watch the leaderboard like a golf pro leading on Sunday. The big missing tips among these excellent tips is to GAMIFY. Gamify doesn't have to be complicated.

LinkedIn gamified when they let us know our profiles are only 90% done. That simple statement made all the Type As on LI want to attain 100% profiles. 100% of WHAT exactly (lol).

See what you can gamify and make it easy to play.
