Less and Less for More and More - Video Game Developers Turn to Micropayments

Less and Less for More and More - Video Game Developers Turn to Micropayments   | Must Play | Scoop.it

Video Game Development Trends
Many trends start in video games.

  • "Leveling Up"
  • Content as Increasingly Addictive
  • Content as a seemingly interactive game
  • DIY - Create your games on our platform

And now the video game biz is embracing micropayments or providing less and less for more and more. Fascinating post with overtones for e-commerce, content marketing, mobile marketing, and digital marketing. http://www.growngaming.com/feature/microtransactions-new-dlc/

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Interesting post about how video games are becoming micropayment gateways. We suspect that trend, one we observed with Harvard Business Review about five years go, will multiply and morph into many business channels.

Chris's curator insight, October 8, 2019 8:55 PM
With the growing trend of Microtransactions in video games, game companies become aware of another means of making a profit other than through the mere purchase of their games. Through distribution of digital goods for use in the game in exchange for real world money, game companies found a way to profit in a way that did not necessarily rest on the merits of the games themselves, but on social engineering and incentive for players to become sources of recurrent revenue.

If Mobile Games Get Any HOTTER They Melt The World

If Mobile Games Get Any HOTTER They Melt The World | Must Play | Scoop.it

Mobile Games Are HOT and Getting Hotter
China's 11.24 billion yuan ($1.86 billion) online game industry is scrambling to devise games that appeal to a generation of players who spend more time on mobile devices than consoles or computers.

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Wow, mobile games are HOT. There is something about destroying what remains of our "free" time that is too good for smart phone enabled gamers to pass up.

Maybe instead of SoLoMo (Social Local Mobile) we should be thinking of MoSoGa (Mobile Social Games). If you are an IMer you would do well to THINK of ways to transform your CONTENT into a MoSoGa :).

Fun idea for gamers. The team at D-Link debated  the impossible and decided best way to settle the score, before coming to blows, was ask us to create brackets and vote our favorite tech up or down.

Here is how they explained their creative contest:

"In a greatest ever tech showdown, who would win between a refrigerator and a Sony Walkman? An iPad and a PlayStation 4?  A Smartwatch and….a Tamagotchi? We asked ourselves these questions at D-Link and nearly came to blows over the answers."

So get if you are a hard core gamer see if your backet can make it all the way to the Final Four.

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Mobile gaming is fully upon us. I'm designing CrowdFunde, our crowdfunding and content marketing app, now and creating mobile first. Bet video games head in the same direction - create the mobile game first then, if the numbers merit it, move to game consoles, laptops and desktops.

Gotten so I think of all Internet marketing as a game and the smartphone as the game console (lol). This LA Times article about Zynga making FarmVille for Mobile is a SOT (Sign of the Times). M

Inside Kabam: Building Berlin and buying British businesses

Building a team with its own dedicated budget to look at not just mobile media, but integrated media, such as television.
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Cool interview with Kabam's President Andrew Sheppard. Just once I want to be able to say this:

"Yeah, our revenues rose 100 per cent in 2013 to almost double our forecast for the year.

We ended 2013 with a ton of great momentum. Internally, there's a general excitement and enthusiasm about where we're going, how we're doing it and increasingly why we're doing it  –  people are pretty fired up.

The core of Kabam is a bunch of people who love hardcore games, that are excited about free-to-play, and it's a company that takes its time to think through, plan and attack big market opportunities, whether that's moving to Facebook with a core game, moving to mobile or expanding into Berlin."

Amazing.

GameStop President Tony Bartel Believes Used Games Playback Will Play Key role going forward in the video game business ...
Forbes
GameStop President Tony Bartel was one of the 48,200 attendees who made the annual pilgrimage to E3 2013 in Los Angeles this week.

Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

Interesting revolution going on in video games. Gamers want the ability to play older games, to own their games, trade their games. The video game industry faces a tipping point similar to music.

Music abandoned the physical thing, the hard good, for iTunes and that was a mistake. There is something about the physical thing that makes a product have presence. Digital "things" may be easier to move but they don't have the same "top of mind" presence created by walking by them or seeing them on the shelf.

I'm selling my albums in the Story of Cancer Store (http://storyofcancer.gostorego.com/ ) and those physical things hold memories of friends, places and time that digital copies will never create. The game industry was just taught a valuable lesson in THINGNESS.
