Understanding Cyberbullying

1.3 FORMS THAT CYBERBULLYING CAN TAKE

1.3.1Cyberbullying takes different forms, some of which are harder to detect or less obviously associated with bullying than others. Schools should already have policies and practices in place for dealing with some of these.

Threats and intimidation

1.3.2Serious threats can be sent to both staff and pupils by mobile phone, email, via comments on websites, social networking sites or message boards.

Harassment or stalking

1.3.3Repeated, prolonged, unwanted texting, whether it is explicitly offensive or not, is a form of harassment. Online stalking (sometimes referred to as ‘cyberstalking’), where a person’s online activities are constantly monitored, can cause psychological harm and fear. Previously safe and enjoyable environments can be experienced as threatening, and online activity may become a source of anxiety.

How Parents can handle cyberbullying on Facebook? | Parenting Information

It seems that with all of the new technology that is available it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep tabs on all of the activities of kids and teens. Teenagers love using social media sites like Facebook, but there are still a lot of dangers that exist parents should be aware of with social media sites.

Parents today might be well aware of the threat of cyberbullying, but often they are just marginally aware of the online sexual predators and objectionable content disseminated through the web.

Cyberbullying: a serious problem, but not an epidemic | SafeKids.com | Cyberbullying, it's not a game! It's your Life!!! | Scoop.it

This is an updated version of post that first appeared on SafeKids.com in 2009.

by Larry Magid

I’m glad that media outlets and public officials are shining a light on cyberbullying and bullying in general. It’s important to pay attention to this serious problem, but we need to keep it in perspective. As bad as it is, cyberbullying is not an epidemic and it’s not killing our children.

Yes, it’s probably one of the more widespread youth risks on the Internet and yes there are some well publicized horrific cases of cyberbullying victims who have committed suicide, but let’s look at this in context.

Stealth Bullies: The Hidden Face of Bullying

Stealth Bullies: The Hidden Face of Bullying | Cyberbullying, it's not a game! It's your Life!!! | Scoop.it
What if preventing bullying is as simple as paying closer attention? The research indicates this may be the case.

Bullying is one of the biggest issues in education today. There are articles in professional journals and parenting magazines about it. There are news stories, it seems almost weekly, about it. There are websites and organizations dedicated to fighting it. There is plenty of advice about preventing it.

===> There's even legislation against it. This month, New Jersey passed an anti-bullying law that's been called the toughest in the nation. <===

What to do if your child's being bullied

What to do if your child's being bullied | Cyberbullying, it's not a game! It's your Life!!! | Scoop.it

Tips and useful websites that can help...

Tell your child that bullying is not acceptable behaviour and that you will do what you can to get the bullying to stop.

Listen to your child's fears, reassure your child that it is not their fault and that this is not something that they will face alone.
Let them know that you will help them.
Don't pressurise them to talk to you.

Give them ideas of who else they could talk to - a relative, a teacher, your GP or ChildLine on tel: 0800 1111.
Help them build up their confidence.
Praise and encourage them.
Talk to his/her teacher and try to work with the school on tackling the problem.
Keep a bullying report - keep records and written details of incidents and if known, the names of perpetrators.
Do not accept that repeated verbal abuse is teasing and not bullying - the important difference to note is whether it is distressing your child.
Ensure that the school take action and follow up each key step until you are satisfied.
Finally, keep notes of meetings, copies of letters and record details of phone calls.
