10 Tools for Developing Students' Listening Skills - by Nik Peachey

10 Tools for Developing Students' Listening Skills - by Nik Peachey | eflclassroom | Scoop.it
For many students listening is the hardest of the four skills to master. Unlike reading, listening happens in real time and it can be hard to control the speed of the information coming at them. They may also have to … Continue reading →

This post presents us 10 Tools for Developing Students’ Listening Skills. Here you have a short description of each of the tools so you can have a general idea and check them if you find them interesting.

LyricsTraining: This amazing app combines listening to songs with learning a language. You can choose from a great variety of songs then you watch the video and choose the level of difficulty by selecting either to reconstruct the whole of the lyrics or to just have a few of the words taken out.

Listen Notes: this is a podcast search engine with a huge collection of podcasts on a wide range of topics. This tool can help you to find listening materials that fit your interests.

Accent Rosie: This app is directly linked to facebook. The app works with Facebook Messenger and sends you short audio clips. You have to listen to the audio clip and write down what you hear.

TeachVid: This app combines listening with watching videos. TeachVid uses videos from YouTube and builds a range of different activities around them, varying from text reconstruction, translation, multiple choice, jumbled sentences and many more.

Read Aloud: This is a text to speech voice reader that you can plug into your browser. The app will open and read the text of the page that you are using. As it reads, it highlights the text so you can see the words as you hear them.

Synth: With this tool you can create your own podcasts and use them as a listening activity in which students have to answer some questions.
Other tools such as Fluid Data, Listen and Write, and SpeakPipe are other tools proposed on this post. For more detailed information you can visit the original post and use the tools that you find more interesting.

Sara Jaramillo's curator insight, April 17, 2020 10:28 PM
I remember that in the first English course that I took, our teacher showed us a mobile application to see the lyrics of our favorite songs for us to practice reading and listening. I loved that method because I was listening and reading something that I liked and practice my English at the same time. It is something similar to the methods proposed in this article, and I think that it is a very good way  to motivate students to learn and practice the language.
maria.cruz@utp.edu.co's curator insight, April 23, 2020 12:07 AM
It is a very interesting platform for students and effective for teachers because children can practice English with one of the hobbies they enjoy the most: music. In addition, teachers find a lesson plan for each song including activities, objectives, materials, and different proficiency levels. From my point of view, it is a very useful alternative for all teachers to get out of the routine and do activities that are linked to the interests of the students.

Who is teaching the teachers?

Who is teaching the teachers? | eflclassroom | Scoop.it

Dire predictions abound for the acute shortage of teachers that we will face in the years to come. Well publicised data from UNESCO has stated that by 2030, 25.8 million teachers will need to have been recruited to provide every child with primary education. One thing we can pretty much know for certain, it is not going to happen.

Where does that leave us? In our view the answer lies in improving the quality and effectiveness of the teachers we do have. This may sound like tinkering around the edges but in emerging markets, where teacher demand is the greatest, the approach is highly relevant. The World Bank arranged surprise visits to classrooms across seven sub-Saharan African countries and found that in nearly half of them, the teacher was absent. Where there are teachers, their subject knowledge is strikingly low. Approximately a quarter of teachers fail simple tasks such as subtracting two-digit numbers amongst maths teachers.
