Digital Evolutions: Startups, Platforms and #Ecosystems

Digital Evolutions: Startups, Platforms and #Ecosystems | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

As some of you may recall, I recently shared with the community a canvas I created for the design of platforms (the so called Platform Design Canvas), which I also had the opportunity to present in Barcelona during the Design Thinking Week. The Canvas will also be the subject of the “Create Platforms, not Products” Workshop that I will give at Frontiers of Interaction Conference in Milan soon (See: http://2013.frontiersofinteraction.com/speakers/simone-cicero/ for details).

The internet of things, DIY computing and the disruptive nature of the Pi | ITProPortal.com

The internet of things, DIY computing and the disruptive nature of the Pi | ITProPortal.com | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The potential for the IoT is utterly endless, with the potential to save money, time and even lives. For example, the NHS could save millions by automating a few physical processes, allowing staff such as nurses to focus more on immediate patient care rather than routine check-ups. There are many parallels between what is already happening in the manufacturing sector and what is likely to happen with the IoT. For example, 3D printers are democratising the means of production, which is leading to fundamental change in manufacturing methods. We are likely to see similar developments in the IoT, with new industries emerging that will permanently alter or replace what was there before.

The 2020 network: How our communications infrastructure will evolve

The 2020 network: How our communications infrastructure will evolve | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The 2020 network will need to support traffic volumes more than 1000x greater than what we see today. In addition, we’ll need connections supporting multi-gigabit throughputs as well as connections of only of a few kilobits-per-second. Smart antennas, ultra-dense deployments, device-to-device communications, expanded spectrum – including higher frequencies – and improved coordination between base stations will be foundational elements of such networks. The explosion and diversity of machine-connected end points will define use cases for low bandwidth, low latency and energy-efficient connections.

The Sharing Economy meets the Internet of Things

The Sharing Economy meets the Internet of Things | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Noise over what has been called Collaborative Consumption – and elsewhere The Sharing Economy – has been increasing in volume for some months now. Kickstarter, a crowdfunding business that exists to let people from anywhere in the world donate to singular projects, is a great example of this new philosophy. The company has played roles in funding films, games consoles and civic projects like the construction of bridges. Zeitgeist has made use of sites likes AirBnB and Housetrip to stay in lovely, very affordable apartments in places like Paris and New York. These diverse businesses aren’t necessarily united in a single cause to drive the sharing economy, but they are all trying to make use of what some economies, particularly in the West, excel at producing:surplus.
