New study review examines benefits of music therapy for surgery patients

New study review examines benefits of music therapy for surgery patients | Science News | Scoop.it
A new study review published by the University of Kentucky found that music therapy can be beneficial to patients before, during and after a surgical procedure and may reduce pain and recovery time.
Maria Drohan's curator insight, October 8, 2013 11:49 AM

I loved this article, it was very interesting. I found it very interesting reading about the characteristics of music that are also very important and effective in music therapy such as the tempo, rhythm and volume of the music. This can be carefully controlled in order to maximize a huge positive effect that music can have on the brain weather conscious or unconscious.

Familiar music arouses coma patients

Familiar music arouses coma patients | Science News | Scoop.it
Last month, dozens of news outlets reported the story of Charlotte Neve, the seven-year-old girl from Lancashire who awoke from a coma after hearing one of her favourite songs. "It's a complete miracle," the girl's mother, Leila, told The Sun. "I thought I was going to lose my little girl. I climbed into her hospital bed to give her a cuddle … and Adele came on the radio. I started singing it to her because she loves her and we used to sing that song together. Charlotte started smiling and I couldn't believe it."

There are other, similar cases. Earlier this year, Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb fell into a coma after contracting pneumonia, and reportedly emerged from it 12 days later after family members began playing familiar music and singing to him. Such cases provide anecdotal evidence that familiar music has beneficial effects on comatose patients. Now, French researchers have conducted the first scientific study of this phenomenon, and their preliminary findings suggest that familiar music probably can increase arousal in coma patients, and may also enhance their cognitive processes....

Listening to music can be effective for reducing pain in high-anxiety persons

Listening to music can be effective for reducing pain in high-anxiety persons | Science News | Scoop.it
Distraction is an effective pain reliever, and a new study concludes that listening to music can be effective for reducing pain in high-anxiety persons who can easily become absorbed in cognitive activities.
Hilary J.'s curator insight, February 13, 2014 7:55 PM

While the research in this article dealt primarily with pain control, an unexpected outcome regarding anxiety patients was found. Distraction is a common tool used to reduce pain in post-surgical and pain-control patients. Essentially, it is the act of redirecting an individual's thoughts into something else other than the pain they are currently feeling. It was found that those patients who had high anxiety in addition to pain control issues were the most responsive to distraction and cognitive redirection. In this way, the researchers initial hypothesis that those with high anxiety would be unable to be redirected was contradicted. This research has important implications in the way that anxiety can be treated. Teaching clients who are suffering from anxiety cognitive redirection and distracting techniques that allow them to be more mindful, such as listening to music, may assist in decreasing their level of anxiety when other interventions are unavailable.

How Music Is Good for Your Brain

How Music Is Good for Your Brain | Science News | Scoop.it

Music is increasingly used as a therapy to treat brain injuries such as those sustained by Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. The idea is that because music is represented by different areas of the brain, it can access deeper neural pathways. "Music then helps patients connect the stored knowledge of words through songs and helps create the new connections needed for speech. This same idea has been used for stroke victims in the past." Music's connection to the hippocampus may also implicate Alzheimer's patients.
