Break Company Silos with Social Media

Break Company Silos with Social Media | Content Curation and Marketing | Scoop.it

"Many B2B companies approach social media the same way they approach other parts of their business. With silos."

Barry Deutsch's insight:

Leveraging social media allows companies to cut across traditional silos in places like sales, marketing, and customer service. We're all serving the customer.

I liked the simple 5 ways the author pointed out to leverage social media in breaking down some of the traditional walls and turf battles of classic bureaucratic departmental structure.

What’s one thing content marketers really want? You want an audience that hangs on your every word. Loyal fans are the foundation of your business,

Sharing Links Is Not Enough

Sharing Links Is Not Enough | Content Curation and Marketing | Scoop.it
What’s the secret to good curation? A critical mind and these 5 other pieces of advice.
Barry Deutsch's insight:

Great article on one of my favorite soapbox topics:

Stop flooding your followers, fans, and connections feeds with worthless crap. START  to filter it by giving relevant, powerful, useful, thought-provoking content that is combined with your insights.

Your network should instantly understand when you curate and share other people's content why it's important to them - and how you help them to "contextualize" (one of my new favorite buzzwords) it for their needs.

Sharing links by itself is like collecting followers, fans, and connections without engaging them in discussion. It's a mindless, worthless, and useless task.

Are you part of the mindless drones dumping links into my feed on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn just to prove you are active in social media  - OR are you helping me by providing insights that I can use and act upon because I trust and respect you?

Count on the three Rs to provide a balanced formula for effective content creation. A mix of recent, reliable, and relevant content is key.
Barry Deutsch's insight:

An excellent reminder of the key elements that should comprise your content marketing. The one I find most difficult is the element of "Relevant".

Everytime I share a piece of content, whether it be through Scoop.it, on our blog, on slideshare, or a  youtube video, I'm always asking myself - is this relevant to the issues and needs faced by my network - whether it be a sales team considering using LinkedIn for social selling, or a hiring manager seeking an important hire.

Do you put extra thought into thinking about whether or not the piece of content you are sharing is relevant - or as I mentioned in another article - is your primary focus - link spraying?

Use Content Marketing To Boost Your Business | Content Curation and Marketing | Scoop.it
iPad vs. Blender (Photo credit: methodshop.com) By Tim Devaney It could be the best content-marketing campaign of all time: the “Will It Blend?
Barry Deutsch's insight:

The increasing success of small businesses and entrepreneurial firms such as the one mentioned in the Forbes article has brought the discussion of whether content marketing is a worthwhile investment from the fringes of the marketing world to the mainstream press.

The big question is what are you waiting for? Are you waiting till your competitors leave you in the dust in terms of capturing your customers and clients?

Are you waiting for your customers and clients to start leaving like following dominos?

Here's an interesting quote from the article that should get your heartrate up a few notches:

"In a survey by Roper Public Affairs, 80% of business decision-makers said they prefer to get information via articles, not ads. Seventy percent said content makes them feel closer to a company, and 60% said content provided by companies helps them make smarter buying decisions."

The companies that understand this trend of business decision making are going to be successful and the ones that ignore it and bury their head in the sand - are going to find themselves out of business.

How to Produce, Reuse and Curate Enough B2B Content | Content Curation and Marketing | Scoop.it
Marketers say they struggle to produce enough content. CMI consultants discuss why it's so hard to produce enough B2B content and offer 3 tips to help.
Barry Deutsch's insight:

I would concur with this article's assessment that most companies, consultants, speakers, coaches, advisors, sales teams struggle to come up with enough "ENGAGING" content.

The article speaks to a few simple ideas on leveraging your content to engage your prospects. I regularly use the same content or variations on that content at various points in the sales funnel.

I also extensively "reuse" the same content in various forms of media from a simple initial blog post or piece of curated content I can now develop a wide range of short and impactful pieces of content:

  • Blog series on a particular pain point
  • A slide show using the same content for slideshare
  • Conversion of the slideshow into a narrated video for youtube
  • Stripping off the audio portion for an itunes podcast
  • Creation of a white paper/short ebook on the content produced

From one simple 300-500 word article, you've now got a massive amount of content to share with your customers and prospects to educate, entertain, differentiate, and move them through the various stages of your sales funnel.

Why the Greatest Content Marketing Companies Start and Stop with CEO

Why the Greatest Content Marketing Companies Start and Stop with CEO | Content Curation and Marketing | Scoop.it
Barry Deutsch's insight:

Marcus Sheridan talks to CEOs in a blog post regarding where the whole on-line marketing component of your business needs to start.

His claim is that without CEO involvement, it's doomed. Like anything else, unless the CEO passionately gets behind the project, especially in small businesses and entrepreneurial firms, it goes nowhere.

Take the example of Moneyball. Without the GMs backing, the concept of analytics to make decisions for a baseball team would have died in the film review department and statistical archives with a junior analyst.

Blogging, Content Marketing, and Social Media campaigns are the exact same thing. The CEO not only needs to throw their support behind it, but also become actively involved.

The problem is that most CEOs don't use social media, discount it, and are waiting on the sidelines to see if others get behind it.

The key question is whether you're a follower of industry trends and what other CEOs do first, or are you willing to be a leader in your industry and the implementer by which your competitors benchmark themselves?

Why Blogs Are A Basic Necessity for Small Businesses | Heidi Cohen | Content Curation and Marketing | Scoop.it
By their nature small businesses are small. This means you have limited employees or budget for extra stuff (Read: anything beyond the basics of running your day-to-day business).
Barry Deutsch's insight:

Heidi Cohen put together a excellent list of reasons, rationalization, and justification for why small businesses and entrepreneurs should be leveraging blogging as a primary marketing platform for communicating.

Not using this tool puts you at a deep disadvantage to your competitors who have already started publishing on their blogs. Do you know if your competitors are using this marketing tool? How long have they been beating you at this game? Are they "stealing" your leads because they are better educators and entertainers through their blogging platform?

Barry Deutsch's insight:

Some great ideas on launching, managing, improving a content marketing strategy program for your business.

I perceive the number #1 issue to be as the author defined it:

"Most marketing professionals (read: small business owners, consultants, coaches, personal service firms) involved in the content creation process do not use editorial calendars."

Just throwing crap against the wall hoping your clients, customers, and prospects will find it engaging is wishful thinking. You've got to plan, structure, organize, and calendar out what you're going to share with those networks on which channels  and when (LinkedIn, Facebook, Google+, and Twitter).

Without an editorial calendar, it comes off as disorganized, random, unprofessional, and lacking in specific purpose.

Create Engaging Content Marketing

Create Engaging Content Marketing | Content Curation and Marketing | Scoop.it
Fear of chaos and the unknown plague businesses struggling with the changing landscape of marketing. To create engaging content, you have to hug the chaos.
Barry Deutsch's insight:

Very interesting perspective of content marketing. I've developed a new catch-phrase from this article  - "HUG THE CHAOS"

Embrace conflict, change, evolution, and new things. Create new experiences. Everyone is afraid of the changing landscape in marketing and sales.

All I hear are excuses, explanations, fears of why it cannot be done differently.

"Let's keep making cold calls because that's what I was taught"

"I don't have time"

"I'm too old to learn new things"

I could go on with hundreds of these. Stop making excuses - digital marketing - content marketing is a way to develop warm and hot leads from those who crave your services and the value of what you offer.

Stop trying to communicate with people that could care less about you and what you can do for them. It's a complete waste of time.

When will the tipping point occur so that advisors, coaches, consultants, speakers, and service providers realize leveraging networks with content marketing means hot and warm leads to the point that the return on investment is an order of magnitude in the 4X-10X range?

Barry Deutsch's insight:

I "stumbled" across this article from Forbes on content creation from August 2011 and wanted to share a few thoughts. I find a lot of companies are struggling with the whole idea that they are publishers in the new digital age to engage with their customers and prospects.

However, it's not just about sharing links, or "re-broadcasting" somebody's conversation. It's about YOU adding context, metaphors, analogies, stories, and examples that tie the content to the key issues that your clients, customers, and prospects struggle with daily.

Content curation and marketing are powerful tools to engage prospects at various stages of your sales funnel, and to reinforce the value you bring to existing customers.

12 Attributes of a Content Curation Strategy

12 Attributes of a Content Curation Strategy | Content Curation and Marketing | Scoop.it
At its core, content curation is like a great editor or blogger who brings his unique taste and understanding of his target audience to his selection of the best content for his readers.
Barry Deutsch's insight:

Heidi Cohen provides an outstanding list of good content curation strategy. She hit the target with this following statement:

"Adds real value. Provide commentary as to why the content is worth your readers’ time. These insights should enhance the content promoted."

Most of the content shared on various networks is not curated! It's just taking 2 seconds to share a link you found - most of the time you probably didn't read the article and you're just pushing it to have something to post in your feed.

This is the "noise" of the internet in activity streams on facebook, twitter, and LinkedIn. I respect and look for individuals who provide insight, and where it's obvious they have read the article and are providing context to me for how it's relevant.

What do you do - share links or curate content for your network and followers?

A How-To for developing your healthcare social media content marketing program. How to present a variety of information formats - a content buffet - to optimize connecting with your community.
Barry Deutsch's insight:

Interesting perspective on reusing content for a variety of mediums like youtube, slideshare, itunes, and blogs. The article is aimed at doctors, but could be any professional marketing services, such as bankers, recruiters, strategic planners, and benefit consultants.

Are you developing content that your prospects and customers/clients find engaging and educational? Are you differentiating yourself through this technique?

Lots of other benefits come to you through a content marketing strategy:

  • SEO is now being focused around content marketing
  • Content marketing is one of the least expensive forms of marketing
  • There are few barriers to producing good content

The key downside - it takes time to produce the content. However, if time is your problem - you could "outsource" the production of the content.

Stop knocking curation

Stop knocking curation | Content Curation and Marketing | Scoop.it
It’s an important, and undervalued, journalistic skill
Barry Deutsch's insight:

A good counterpoint to those who knock curation. The problem I see is that the vast majority of individuals, especially on LinkedIn and Twitter, consider curation to be sharing links to articles from major business publications.

I agree with Steven in his definition of being the filter of quality content. Curation is the process of putting an article or piece of content in front of your network with your perspective on the value it brings to them. It's not about sharing links.

How do you add value to the various segments of your network? Do you entertain, educate, persuade, challenge, and seek to be known as a trustworthy source of information and insights?

White Papers | Examples of Content Marketing Strategy Success | Content Curation and Marketing | Scoop.it
Curt Porritt of MasterControl sat down with CMI to discuss his organization's white paper success and how testing has helped drive content marketing choices.
Barry Deutsch's insight:

Do you use white papers in your industry to dominate the conversation with customers? In this blog post, the author describes a fairly technical company that used white papers to dominate their industry as the "go-to" resource, "information central", primary publisher of useful information.

As a result of this customer OR prospect education approach, their success has grown.

Have you considered dominating your industry through the use of white papers that you could give away to your prospects - and at the same time build your marketing leads funnel?

Video Curation Is the New Secret Sauce of Content Marketing

Video Curation Is the New Secret Sauce of Content Marketing | Content Curation and Marketing | Scoop.it
The future of the web won't be about content sites that drive traffic to commerce sites. It won't be about shopping sites or price matching sites that drive consumers to the lowest price sources.

Barry Deutsch's insight:

Everyone is jumping on the video bandwagon. Do you re-purpose your blog content, tools, and other marketing materrials-case studies-customer issues into short videos?

The entire web is shifting to a more educational, entertainment-oriented, visual and graphically rich environment.

When was the last time you read a wall of text. Were you bored to death? Do you "spice" up your content with visually interesting graphics, pictures, and video?

Help Sales Use Content to Win Buyer Trust

Help Sales Use Content to Win Buyer Trust | Content Curation and Marketing | Scoop.it
Sales - Buyers don't care about your product or service. They just care about the problems and opportunities they face and how your expertise can help them. Accordingly, Marketing and Sales share ...
Barry Deutsch's insight:

Some great material on the importance in B2B sales of why content marketing (social media and blogging) are so important to "manage" the customer conversation early in the process.

Here is a snippet from the blog post that should scare you silly if you're not yet using content marketing to capture and nuture leads early in the sales process/funnel.

"The proverbial tough nut to crack: getting prospects to engage as early in the process as possible.

That's not an easy task when 70% of the buying process is complete before the buyer engages with a salesperson (SiriusDecisions). But it's all the more critical when 65% of the time executives go with the vendor that's been helping early on to set the buying vision (Forrester) and 39% of top producers offer buyers a novel perspective about how to win in the marketplace (The Challenger Sale: Taking Control of the Customer Conversation).

If those statistics don't grab you, then consider this: 66% of B2B buyers credit "consistent and relevant communication provided by both the sales and marketing organizations as a key influence in choosing the company they ultimately made a purchase from" (DemandGen Report and Genius.com)."

Can I Afford Content Marketing? Introducing the 52 Points Principle

Can I Afford Content Marketing? Introducing the 52 Points Principle | Content Curation and Marketing | Scoop.it
Right now, a competing organization is reaching the “52 points principle” and capturing leads you could have for your business, while seeing their marketing costs decrease. Many organizations ask t...
Barry Deutsch's insight:

The 52 points principle might be similar to the old marketing adage that you've got to hit potential buyers at least 7 times across a variety of media to capture their interest.

In the new normal of the digital world, content marketing becomes self-sustaining, builds upon itself, and creates additional opportunities for repurposing to get at how buyers of your product or service like to see information.

After writing blog posts for the last 5 years, I have hundreds of posts that get recirculated, passed along, 1+ on google, and re-read. My content from 5 years ago is just as relevant today as it was back then.

In looking at the stats of page views on my various blog properties, I see that some of my older blog posts from last year get a higher number of views daily than some of my newer content. Many of those same blog posts get converted into audio programs for sharing on itunes, powerpoint presentations for sharing on slideshare, and videos for watching on youtube.

The author makes the point that your invest of time and energy go down dramatically as you do more and more content curation, creation, and sharing.

Are you ready to create a lead generation machine so that your network comes to the conclusion you're the ONLY one that could possibly imagine working with to solve their problems?
